Time Off in Lieu (TOIL)

Paid time off given instead of overtime pay for extra hours already worked.

Time off in lieu (TOIL), also called time in lieu or comp time, compensates employees for overtime with equivalent paid leave rather than cash. "In lieu" means "instead of."

TOIL is usually accrued at 1:1 (one hour worked = one hour off), though employers often apply a premium such as 1.5× for evenings or 2× for weekends and public holidays.

Example: An employee who works 4 extra hours at a 1.5× rate banks 6 hours of TOIL.

In Orvella: Orvella's banked-time feature logs overtime with a multiplier, routes it for approval, and converts it to a usable leave balance.
