Compensatory Time (Comp Time)

Paid time off granted instead of overtime pay for extra hours already worked.

Compensatory time, or comp time, lets an employee take paid time off later in exchange for overtime worked, rather than receiving overtime pay. It is closely related to time off in lieu (TOIL), a term more common outside the US.

Rules vary by jurisdiction and employment type — in some places comp time in place of overtime pay is restricted for certain workers, so policies should be checked against local law.

Example: Working 4 extra hours one week to take a half-day off the next.

In Orvella: Orvella tracks earned comp/banked time on a ledger and lets approved hours convert into a usable leave balance.
