Parental Leave

Leave taken by a parent around the birth or adoption of a child (includes maternity and paternity leave).

Parental leave covers maternity, paternity, and adoption leave — time off for a parent to bond with and care for a new child. It may be paid, unpaid, or a mix, depending on jurisdiction and employer policy.

Because parental leave is often longer and governed by specific rules, it's commonly tracked as a dedicated leave type.

Example: A parent taking 12 weeks off after the birth of a child is on parental leave.
